Ward Melville High School’s Level 3 American Sign Language (ASL) students recently took their learning beyond the classroom by sharing their storytelling skills with young students. As part of a special project, they created original books and visited Minnesauke, Nassakeag and Setauket elementary schools to read them in ASL to second graders.

This engaging experience allowed high school students to practice their signing while introducing younger students to the beauty of ASL. Through expressive storytelling, they fostered connections and encouraged a greater appreciation for sign language within the school community.

A big congratulations to the ASL students for making language learning fun and interactive for the next generation.

Aura Valdivia, a dedicated sixth grader at Nassakeag Elementary School, recently completed her Girl Scout Bronze Award project. For her project, Aura designed and installed vinyl stickers with motivational messages on the stairs in the school’s Lobby/Well. The 12 messages she created focused on antibullying, combating stereotypes, and promoting happiness and positive actions, all aimed at fostering a supportive and encouraging atmosphere at school.

Aura’s project was made possible through the generosity and support of her family, friends, Troop 1733, local business Decal Designs Mobile, the S-Section Neighborhood, Mrs. Levine, Nassakeag School and the Three 91²Ö¿â School 91²Ö¿â. To fund the installation of the stickers, Aura collected redeemable plastic bottles, with help from her community.

In addition to the physical installation of the stickers in September, Aura also took time to educate her classmates about the importance of creating a positive school environment. She visited Mr. Hugues’ class and Mrs. Oppenheim’s first grade class to share the details of her project and discuss the significance of fostering kindness and inclusivity.

Aura is grateful for the support she received throughout the project and is excited to have contributed something meaningful to her school community. Her work serves as a reminder of the importance of standing up against bullying and creating a space for everyone to feel valued and respected.

The kindergarten classes at Nassakeag Elementary had a fantastic time bonding with their buddies this March. Mrs. Vohrer’s class and Ms. Pontes’ class teamed up for two memorable activities that combined fun, learning and hands-on exploration.

First, the students visited the Scholastic Book Fair, where they explored a wide range of books and picked out their favorites. It was an exciting opportunity for the young learners to discover new stories and enjoy the thrill of picking out books together.

Later in the month, on St. Patrick’s Day, the students headed to the Science Lab for a hands-on experiment focused on the colors of the rainbow and Isaac Newton’s discoveries about light and color. The students were fascinated by the experiment, which gave them a deeper understanding of science in a fun and engaging way.

It was a month full of shared experiences and valuable learning moments for both classes, and they can’t wait to continue their buddy adventures in the future.

Excitement filled the air at Nassakeag Elementary as students in grades 1-4 gathered for a fun-filled Hollyrock assembly – marking the first event held in the school’s auditorium since its recent renovations.

The interactive assembly brought students together for an engaging and educational experience, featuring lively games, trivia and team challenges. Teachers and staff were thrilled to see the space back in use, providing a much-needed venue for schoolwide events.

The assembly not only provided entertainment but also encouraged teamwork, critical thinking and school spirit. With the auditorium officially reopened, the Nassakeag community looks forward to many more exciting events in this beloved space.

Students in Mrs. Cain’s kindergarten class at Nassakeag Elementary recently enjoyed a special lesson about Eid, thanks to two visiting parents. Lilah Awadallah and Fortuna Anannya, both parents of students in the class, read a book about the holiday and shared its cultural significance with the young learners.

The interactive session introduced the children to the traditions and celebrations of Eid, helping to foster a greater understanding of different cultures and holidays. Through storytelling and discussion, the students learned about themes of generosity, family and gratitude that are central to the holiday.

The visit was a meaningful opportunity for the class to expand their knowledge of diverse traditions, reinforcing the importance of inclusion and cultural awareness in education.
