R.C. Murphy Junior High School recently held its much-anticipated annual Staff vs. Student basketball game, an event that brings together school spirit, friendly competition and plenty of excitement.

Organized by the physical education and world language departments, the event is a highlight of the year for both students and faculty. A key part of the lead-up to the game is a 3-on-3 basketball tournament held each March, in celebration of March Madness. The tournament is coordinated by world language teacher Mr. Geoninatti and open to all students.

The winning teams from the eighth and ninth grade brackets earn the unique opportunity to represent the student body in the final Staff vs. Student game. This year’s matchup showcased the talent, teamwork and sportsmanship of both sides, with the gym filled with cheers and support from the entire school community.

This April, eighth grade students at P.J. Gelinas and R.C. Murphy junior high schools participated in crucial lessons on hate speech, with a special focus on addressing antisemitism. At Gelinas, the sessions were led by Dr. Cone, director of social studies, and Ms. Keane, the principal, through English classes. At Murphy, Dr. Cone led the discussions in social studies classes.

The interactive sessions helped students understand what constitutes hate speech, why it is harmful and the consequences of such behavior. Using real-world examples, students explored how hateful rhetoric impacts individuals and communities, while also learning strategies to speak out against discrimination.

This initiative reflects the Three 91²Ö¿â Central School 91²Ö¿â’s commitment to combating prejudice and promoting a culture of empathy, respect and inclusivity.

The Murphy Junior High theater students brought the magic of “Anastasia” to life with a breathtaking series of evening performances. The full production captivated audiences from March 26-29, immersing the community in the beloved story of adventure, identity and destiny.

With stunning performances, beautiful music and mesmerizing stage design, the talented cast and crew transported theatergoers to early 20th-century Russia and Paris. Each show was met with enthusiastic applause as the students showcased their dedication and artistry.

Murphy Junior High School hosted a special award breakfast to honor outstanding student achievements in academics and the arts. The event, attended by students and administrators, recognized students for their excellence in the Geography Bee, Spelling Bee, creative writing and visual arts competitions.

Ninth grade students recently participated in a Multi-Faith Forum, an enriching event designed to deepen their understanding of world religions. Held on March 11 at Murphy Junior High School and March 18 at Gelinas Junior High School, the forum complemented the ninth grade Global History curriculum, which explores major belief systems such as Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism and Sikhism.

Dr. Christina Cone, director of social studies, emphasized the forum’s value in connecting classroom learning with real-world experiences, fostering intellectual curiosity and historical insight. The event supported the New York State Social Studies Framework by highlighting the impact of religions on societies and cultures.

Through discussions with faith representatives, students gained firsthand insights into religious traditions, strengthening their comparative study skills and broadening their perspectives on global history.
